Darren Ellenbolt

Justice for Survivors Wisconsin is reaching out to former patients of Dr. Darren R. Ellenbolt. Darren Ellenbolt permanently revoked his medical license in the state of Wisconsin on January 18, 2023, after it was discovered that he was keeping detailed, graphic, sexual, handwritten notes about female patients and their bodies. These female patients included children.

The Wisconsin Medical Examining Board’s Conclusion of Law related to Darren Ellenbolt’s conduct as a family medicine physician is as follows:

“By the conduct described in the Findings of Fact, Respondent engaged in sexually explicit conduct, sexual contact, exposure, gratification, or other sexual behavior with or in the presence of a patient, a patient’s immediate family, or a person responsible for the patient’s welfare as defined within Wis. Admin. Code § Med 10.03(2)®.”

Here is a copy of the State of Wisconsin Medical Board’s Orders, which is a public document available online. https://online.drl.wi.gov/decisions/2023/ORDER0008366-00019807.pdf

Two local news stories are linked below.

Patient information is protected by law. Patient records are protected by law. Patients’ rights to have a physician who is not engaging in sexual misconduct are protected by law. Children are protected by law.

As we attempt to contact potential victims, we are not including any specific details related to the content because we want to protect their privacy as much as possible. In addition, we know and respect that some potential victims may want to know the details regarding how they are involved, while others may not. We do not want to take that choice away from anyone.

If you desire to obtain more details, have questions, or would like to file a complaint or criminal charges, more information is listed below.

We understand that investigations such as this are known for being slow. However, we do not want it to end up being the case that the potential victims were never notified.

If you were one of Darren Ellenbolt’s patients, please know that you are not alone, and that there is support available. Those affected by Darren Ellenbolt’s violations and violations of their lawfully protected medical information deserve to be notified. They deserve to have knowledge of the facts. They have the right to be safe and protected. They have the right to respond and be heard. They have the right to heal in whatever way is best for them. They deserve meaningful justice.

Welcome!

I am Sara Ellenbolt, and I founded Justice for Survivors Wisconsin because I want to channel and transform the pain and horror from my personal experiences as a victim of domestic violence, interpersonal violence, and coercive control abuse into knowledge and support for others. I don’t want anyone to have to endure what my children and I have had to endure from our abuser and from the broken systems that should be advocating for and ensuring our safety.

Rather than helping us to safety and supporting measures to ensure ongoing safety, these broken systems often facilitate and participate in the ongoing abuse and fear. There are too many victims who carry this pain, and there are victims who do not live long enough to escape or to tell their stories. There are too many victims, such as myself, who beg and plead for safety for themselves and their children, provide clear evidence to substantiate the safety concerns, and request evidence-based, research supported measures for safety, who have their valid safety concerns minimized and ignored by those with the authority and power to increase safety and minimize abuse. These broken systems contribute to shame and fear. These broken systems favor abusers’ rights at the expense of victims’ safety and rights.

Victims of abuse often feel they have to carry this burden alone and in silence, which gives the abusers and predators a greater sense of power and control. I want to take back that power and control over my own life and help others do the same. The broken systems that should be advocating for the safety of victims of abuse have a reputation for falling short and failing to protect the most vulnerable. Unfortunately, the horror stories about family court have proven true in my case, and in talking with others, they are experiencing similar failings of family court to protect victims of abuse.

While I am a victim of abuse, I am more importantly a survivor. I am taking back my power from my abuser. I am striving to remain a survivor and not lose this battle for my autonomy, my happiness, my safety, and my life. As a mother, friend, nurse, woman, and human being, I am ready to fight for my rights to safety, and to advocate for the safety of others who are harmed by abusers and predators.
